What Is A Canonical Meta Tag?

A canonical link is included in the HTML code of a web page to indicate the original source of the content.

This markup is used to address SEO problems with duplicate content which arise when different pages with different URLs contain identical or nearly identical content.

A canonical link is added to the <head> of a webpage to indicate the canonical URL version. For example:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.magetop.com/magento-extensions.html" />

Steps To Enable Canonical Meta Tag In Magento 2

1. Log in to Admin Panel.

2. On the Admin Panel sidebar, go to Stores > Settings > Configuration.

3. In the left panel, choose CATALOG > Catalog.

4. Expand the Search Engine Optimization section.

5. Untick Use system value and set Use Canonical Link Meta Tag for Categories to “Yes”, if you want search engines to index only category pages using the full category path.

6. Untick Use system value set Use Canonical Link Meta Tag for Products to “Yes”, if you want search engines to index product pages only using the domain-name/product-url-key format.

7. Click Save Config when complete.
